The sounds of woodpeckers drumming
Great spotted woodpecker drumming sounds at dawn in woodland.
One of the iconic sounds of spring in Europe is the loud drumming of woodpeckers on tree trunks. Males advertise their territories by rapidly hitting dead trees with their beaks. Other creatures would get brain damage from this activity, but woodpeckers are adapted to this and don't seem to mind. Great spotted woodpeckers (and other woodpeckers for that matter) also use this technique when probing tree trunks for grubs and other insects that live under the bark, and when making a tree cavity for nesting.
On a recent trip to the English countryside I found a nice little grove in thick woodland. While it was close to farmland, it seemed quiet during the weekend so I set up a few overnight drop rigs that managed to capture this recording. It's not 100% free of other sounds but it captures the essence of the dawn chorus in UK woodlands very nicely. The woodpecker was drumming fairly close so it's quite prominent in the mix, while man-made sound is minimal. The only processing I did is rolling off some of the low end from farm machinery which did not sound very nice.
Recorded with Sony PCM A10 and Clippy EM272 microphones in Suffolk, England. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:

The crazy sounds of Chachalacas
Переглядів 3224 години тому
Chaco chachalacas make a crazy racket in the Pantanal, overpowering every other sounds with their raspy strident calls. If you wake up just before sunrise to listen to the dawn chorus, you will witness the Pantanal slowly coming to life. The soft insect chorus of the night fades away as sparse birdsong emanates from woodlands and hedgerows. It's an idyllic atmosphere that invites immersion into...
Sounds of the jungle at night
Переглядів 40012 годин тому
The sound of the cicadas slowly takes over the soundscape as the sun is setting over the jungles of Yunnan. The cloud forests of Mount Gaoligong are full of life but this is not a lowland jungle. It can get pretty cold here at night, and sunlight is limited by the ever-present fog and cloud. Wildlife has to be clever about resource usage, especially when it comes to acoustic communication. The ...
The loud sounds of noisy Monk parakeets
Переглядів 22314 годин тому
Monk parakeets are cute but noisy little parrots. These birds originate from South America but feral populations are established in many parts of the world. This happens as captive birds escape or are released, which is yet another reason not to keep wild animals as pets. As a result of these feral populations, many people around the world are probably familiar with their raucous calls resonati...
The raucous sounds of Hyacinth macaws
Переглядів 3,9 тис.19 годин тому
What sounds does the largest parrot in the world make? Hyacinth macaws are huge birds with amazing plumage that call the Pantanal and other parts of Brazil their home. They live in noisy groups together with parakeets and other birds, and they rely almost exclusively on Manduvi trees for nesting. Interestingly, Manduvi trees depend on toucans for seed dispersal, but these toucans also prey on m...
The sounds of the Red eyed dove
Переглядів 28121 годину тому
The Red-eyed dove calls its name for everyone to hear it. This plump pigeon goes: I am a red eyed dove, I am a red eyed dove! If you're just learning to ID birds by their calls, this is one of the easiest to remember. Red-eyed doves inhabit most of sub-Saharan Africa with the exception of thick rainforest and very dry desert. They are not the loudest birds or even doves in their territory, so r...
Wild China sounds - Dawn chorus in the mountain forests of Yunnan
Переглядів 816День тому
As light penetrates through the the cloud forests of Yunnan, the soundscape becomes more lively and lush. On my recent trip to China I had the privilege of exploring a very remote area on the border with Myanmar. Getting here is complicated and requires a lot of permits, hard work and serious negotiation with the rangers and gatekeepers of this place. While this part of the world is a hotspot o...
The piercing sound of one cicada
Переглядів 54314 днів тому
What does a cicada sound like? In the montane rainforests of China's Yunnan province, insect life is abundant and loud. There are several species of cicada, but the atmosphere isn't always saturated with their calls. Much like other mountain cloud forests, there are big gaps in the soundscape over the course of a day/night cycle. These gaps make it easier to hear and record the sounds of indivi...
The sounds of Emerald-spotted wood dove
Переглядів 2,3 тис.14 днів тому
The curious sounds of Emerald-spotted wood doves (Turtur chalcospilos) in the African savanna. Some of my favourite sounds of sub-Saharan Africa are dove calls. Unlike small songbirds, doves make lower frequency sounds and African doves in particular have a wide range of calls. There's no shortage of patterns, rhythms, syncopation and excitement in their song. The Turtur genus encompasses 5 spe...
The weird sounds of Sportive lemurs
Переглядів 32614 днів тому
What even do these lemurs sound like! Lemurs are poorly studied and sadly many species are threatened or endangered. Very few people have the willpower and knowledge to live in Madagascar so they can research these fascinating primates. Probably a handful of people have spent a lot of time recording their sounds. When I set out to explore Mada in 2022, I had no idea what to expect. I had read a...
The sounds of Madagascar nightjar
Переглядів 39421 день тому
The repetitive calls of Madagascar nightjars. You've heard nightjars before, but have you hear the Mad nightjar? On my trip to Madagascar in 2022 I spent a lot of time exploring patches of dry forest at night. One of the iconic sounds of the bush at night there is the clicky rattle of this secretive nightjar. There are lots of them around and they're not shy at all! Recorded with Sony PCM A10 a...
The beautiful sounds of blackbirds
Переглядів 41221 день тому
Listen to these European (or common) blackbirds singing in a forest. On my trip to the Danube Delta in 2019 I captured a lot of interesting material, but one of my favourite recordings from that expedition has to be this calm recording of a blacbird calling wistfully in a forest. There was a slight bit of wind, but otherwise there wasn't much happening. I'd been meaning to capture the sound of ...
The sounds of european frogs and toads croaking
Переглядів 41628 днів тому
Listen to dozens of frogs croaking at a small pond. Growing up in NE Romania, the sound of spring was of course a lot of birdsong but also frog croak cacophony. From ponds to creeks and puddles to rivers, species like Bombina bombina and Hyla arborea would burst into calls at sunset and sometimes keep calling all through the night. As a kid I could hear this magical (or very annoying, depending...
The sounds of Madagascar's dry forests at night
Переглядів 816Місяць тому
What do the forests of Madagascar sound like at night? Before I go on any expedition I will spend a good amount of time researching the location and its wildlife. Sometimes there are sound recordings I can listen to, although the quality varies a lot. In the case of Madagascar's Wester dry forests, I could not find much in terms of audio, or even visuals for that matter. This is a very poorly r...

Soft dawn chorus in the jungles of Nepal
Nice sir, What time did you record it?
love it
It‘s at the edge between rhythm and pitch, I guess about 16-18 Hz.

Maybe the transcription shoud be in CAPS 😉, Thanks George
Very helpful for babies that cannot fall asleep at night.
I really enjoyed the sounds, and the way you write about them! I sense a bit of a love/hate relationship with these animals 😂

Love. Thanks George.
Thanks for your work, George.
Maravilloso. Mi mente vuela hacia allá y se encuentra con mi espíritu.
I don't know how you are so underrated! You are thousands of times better and genuine than any other sleeping apps and non stop calming sound videos found in UA-cam. All of them are artificial & repetitive but you are fabulous. You are doing a great job man. Carry on. I wish you a very healthy and prosperous life ahead. Love from India ❣️❤ (2)
Raucous - the perfect word to describe this sound. Awesome!

Very beautiful sounds, thank you! Could you please clarify did you remove noise and if yes in which soft?
I listened to this audio when I was in Manú, Peru and I had the same exact jungle chorus around me (minus the Jaguar sounds)… it was almost impossible to tell if my headphones were on or off. Now when I listen, I can imagine I am back there. :) thank you for providing me a little portal.
Thank you for the great recording! Is picture from there too?
Very nice George 👍👍👍
Beautiful sounds! Makes me want to be there. I noticed that the background noise level drops a bit each time the loud bird whistles. Did it happen during recording or is it on purpose in post processing?
Bahia Bellena ... Nooooice!!
